As a husband, I lack creativity in showing my love for Deanna. This past Monday marked our 24th wedding anniversary. We went out to eat (Texas Roadhouse), then went to the mall and walked around. To be honest, I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. We really didn’t do anything extreme or extraordinary – we just spent time together. I would have enjoyed it just as much if it had been a burger at McDonald’s and a stroll around the local Walmart. You see, it is the time spent together that made our time special.
As a daddy, I am often perplexed in coming up with ideas of what to buy Lacey and Hannah for birthdays or Christmas. Deanna does a much better job at selecting that “perfect” gift. However, when I travel to a board meeting in Nashville, or have to be away overnight for whatever reason, I try to pick up something along the way to bring back to my girls. I want them to know that I love them and have been thinking of them.
You know, my heavenly Father also likes to spend time with us. And our time with Him is always special. And when it comes to gifts, well, “every good and perfect gift” comes from Him. From the morning songs of His feathered creatures to the bright twinkle of the stars at night, He reminds us that He loves us, and has been thinking of us.
I am glad that, before the foundation of the world, He thought of me. He longed for a righteous relationship with me, but I could not measure up to His holy standard. So, He sent the greatest Gift – His only begotten Son, to be the Sacrifice for my sin.
Yes, long before I was born, He thought of me. Long before I was born, He saw my need of a Savior. Long before I was born, He sent His Son. Long before I was born, Jesus died, so that I could know my Father.
Living, He loved me.
Dying, He saved me.
Buried, He carried my sins far away.
Rising, He justified freely, for ever:
One day He’s coming, O, glorious day!
The Cross tells me He longed to redeem me. The empty tomb tells me He is exactly who He claimed to be. And since He is who He claimed to be, His promises are trustworthy.
“I go to prepare you a place… and I will come again, that where I am, there you may be also.” – Jesus (John 14)
